The Standard Model of particle physics (SM) is incomplete, since it fails to explain the neutrino oscillation phenomena. A viable modification implies massive neutrinos. Remarkably, there are anomalous results in several experiments, which ask for additional neutrino components, so called sterile neutrinos. There are several experimental projects aimed at probing this hypothesis. Sterile neutrinos is one of the possible physics beyond the Standard Model motivated by neutrino oscillations. Depending on their masses (and numbers) they can be also responsible for the matter-antimatter asymmetry, dark matter, anomalies in neutrino oscillation experiments. We describe the general setup and various options one has depending on the neutrino mass scale.
