Prof. Dionys Baeriswyl condolence note

We are very sad to inform that our friend and collaborator, Dionys Baeriswyl, passed away last evening, August 9th.

Right from the start, Dionys was enthusiastic about the idea of the establishment of the International Institute of Physics (IIP) at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN). He had visited the city of Natal a few years before the UFRN and the Brazilian Ministry of Science and Technology (MCT) came to the decision to establish the new Institute there, in late 2009.

From then on Dionys was frequently present at the IIP in Natal. He was an active member of its first International Advisory Council (IAC).

Dionys served at IAC for six years, never missing one of its annual meetings. He was also directly involved in the organization of several memorable scientific meetings in condensed matter physics and related topics.

His prolific and frequent association with the IIP never stopped. After leaving the board, he became an IIP Distinguished Professor and is well known to different generations of students and postdoctoral associates for his inspiring talks and numerous interventions in our research seminars.

The many months he stayed in Natal were cherished by all thanks to his high spirits, his critical views of physics and life in general and his never ending optimism and generosity.

The IIP owes immensely to him.
