I summarize recent progress on boundary conditions inspired by near horizon physics that lead to infinite copies of the Heisenberg algebra as symmetry algebra. Zero energy excitations, dubbed "soft hair" by Hawking, Perry and Strominger, arise as descendants using this algebra. The BTZ black hole entropy can be accounted for by the combinatorics of specific soft hair states, the "horizon fluffs". I also address generalizations to theories with higher derivatives, higher spins and higher dimensions.
