School Strongly Coupled Field Theories for Condensed Matter and Quantum Information Theory

School | Sun, Aug 02, 2015 | Fri, Aug 14, 2015
Directors:
Pasquale Sodano (IIP-UFRN)
Alvaro Ferraz (International Institute of Physics - UFRN)
Kumar S. Gupta
Gordon Semenoff (University of British Columbia)

The IIP Advanced School on “Strongly Coupled Field Theories for Condensed Matter and Quantum Information Theory” will bring together in Natal leading researchers to discuss recent theoretical results on strongly coupled quantum field theories and to analyze their use and relevance for describing new quantum states, which are physically realizable in both condensed matter and cold-atom systems. Particular attention will be devoted to the engineering of these states in quantum devices and novel materials useful for quantum information processing.

The lectures shall provide an updated review of the most relevant progress and methods used in the analysis of strongly coupled field theory, discussing their relevance for describing the emergence of new quantum states in strongly correlated condensed matter systems and pointing out promising realizations of these states in pertinently engineered quantum devices relevant for quantum information processing.

The IIP Advanced School aims to attract PhD students and young postdocs with the purpose of fostering the formation-especially in Brazil- of young researchers capable of carrying competitive research in a frontier area of theoretical physics where the solution of issues of fundamental science meets with the promise of relevant technological applications.

We plan to offer a series of courses (6-4 hours each) on pertinently selected general topics and some invited Research Colloquia. The Advanced School program precedes a one-week informal workshop with at most 4-research seminars/day; the satellite workshop should provide ample time for discussions and collaborations between participants and lecturers.

The IIP Advanced School will run from August 2 until August 15 2015. The satellite workshop from August 17 to August 21. In applying, participants should clearly state to which event they intend to participate. Of course, participation to both events is strongly encouraged. There will be a limited number of fellowship available to help defraying staying expenses in NATAL; in a few -exceptional and well-motivated- cases we can provide support for the traveling expenses of participants.

The event will be hosted at the Praiamar Hotel

DEADLINE FOR APPLICATION is May 30 2015. Due to limited space we can accommodate up to 60 participants. We encourage EARLY applications since, for equally qualified candidates, we will select on a “first arrive first serve” basis. Confirmation of your acceptance to participate to the planned events will be e-mailed to you by June 15.

School fees:

Students = US$70,00 / €55,00 / R$150,00

Post-Docs and Professionals  = US$120,00 / €90,00 / R$250,00

Registration Fee: All the participants are expected to pay the registration fee. Members of the local community (institutions in Natal) are considered as free listeners and are exempt from paying the fee.

*Registration fee is only accepted in cash during the first three days of the event.

Accommodation and transportation to be determined for those who qualify for financial help. You may apply for financial support on your online registration form.
