This workshop aims to bring together researchers and postgraduate students from different areas with a focus on the presentation of tutorials and lectures of experts in the writing of articles and scientific proposals.
The "Meet the Editors" workshop was initially a biennial event
at the Institute of Physics of São Carlos (IFSC). The first (2008) and second (2010) editions were mainly focused on presentations by APS Magazine Editors Journals Physical Review B and Physical Review, following the "Tutorial for Authors and Referees" format, traditionally presented by these Editors at the APS March Meeting.
The 3rd edition (2012) of "Meet the Editors" also addressed the relevant issue of scientific writing, beyond its usual scope. The Prof. Laurens Molenkamp (Editor-in-Chief of Physical Review B since 2012), Dr. Jessica Thomas (Physics Editor), and Mrs. Karie Friedman (former editor of Reviews of Modern Physics) were the three invited editors at the time.
The 4th edition (2014) of the workshop followed the 2012 format.
Healthy mix of lectures "tutorial for authors and referees" and more lectures scientific writing. In addition to Mrs. Karie Friedman, we invited Ms. Celia M. Elliott (Director of External Affairs, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign) and Dr. Julie Kim Zajonz [Editor of Physical Review Applied]. In this fourth edition, we had a new topic, namely a half-day "Written Proposal" seminar by Mrs. Elliott who offers this kind of workshop at many American universities. In particular, Ms. Elliott works closely with the world-renowned physicists at her home institution, such as the Nobel laureate Anthony Leggett. She assists the faculty members of the University of Illinois physics department with scientific proposals and writings. It also acts as a kind of internal publisher.
The 2016 edition of the workshop brought together the editors and also Prof. Laura Greene, Elected President of the American Physical Society (biennial 2017/2018) and former physicist at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (Prof. Emerito), who is now a professor at Florida State University and chief scientist at National High Magnetic Field Laboratory. Only briefly, Prof. Greene has a long-standing interest in scientific writing, science communication, and publishing in general.
Recently, at the March meeting of the American Physical Society in Baltimore, she presented the "Publishing in Peer-Reviewed Journals" lecture during the two-day workshop, Brazil-US Young-Physical Forum.
The 2018 edition will have an important novelty: the first part of the event will be organized on the central campus of USP - São Paulo on 1-2/10. The second part will be held at the International of Physics at UFRN on 3/10 - 5/10 with the participation of local researchers and of the nearby universities (UFPE, UFPB, etc.) and departments and centers of UFRN areas.
