Topological Structures in Ferroic Materials

Workshop-School | Sunday, June 03, 2018 - Saturday, June 23, 2018
Directors:
Jose Antonio Eiras (Federal University of São Carlos )
Igor Lukyanchuk (University of Picardy)
Jan Seidel (University of New South Wales )

OVERVIEW

Current research interests in interfaces, domains, domain walls, vortices, spin currents and torques, spin textures and skyrmions in ferromagnets, ferroelectrics, multiferroics, and functional soft materials constitute an emerging field in solid state physics and material science. Connecting these research fields with topological concepts in physics will contribute to the fundamental understanding of these new phenomena.

The goal of the workshop-school is to overview the global situation in topological ferroic phases and bring together the leading scientists and young researchers working with different ferroic materials from ferroelectrics to ferromagnets and liquid crystals but studying their similar topological structures. It will help to the researchers working with different materials not only to find the contacts and the common language between each other but also to understand the conceptual emergent topological ideas of the modern condensed matter physics, such as skyrmions, homotopy groups, topological stability etc. on the simple ready-to-use level. The training of the early stage researchers will help to introduce the emergent topological concepts in solid state physics for the young generation of scientists.

In frame of the Workshop-School the International conference TOPO2018 will be held from 12 to 16 June 2018. See web-site www.topo2018.ferroix.net for details.

The Workshop-School will generate synergies between research communities working on ferroelectric, magnetic and soft materials both in theory and experiment and stimulate the development of the durable collaboration links during the lasting working groups and of tutorials that will accompany the Workshop-School.

The non-exhaustive list of topics includes:

  • Domains and domain walls

  • Skyrmions and chiral spin textures

  • Vortex, anti-vortex and vertex structures in ferroics

  • Topological Phase transitions: from GL to BKT

  • Nanoelectronics using domain wall logic

  • Spin torque , spin waves and spintronics

  • Interfaces and topologies

  • Nanoscale characterisation of ferroics

  • Topological structures in soft matter, biology etc.
